Furniture Society conference: Cali-style - MFA or not?
    Woodshop News

    2005-08-01
    (page 15)

Of all the panels at the Furniture Society's annual conference, Woodshop News chose to report on two. The first was MFA of not? which Bart Niswonger proposed and moderated. "One of the liveliest panel discussions, ... For nearly two hours the merits of obtaining a masters of fine arts were debated".

In the world of studio furniture, there is a schism between those producing "art" in a furniture form and those artfully producing furniture. The former group can be (overly generally) identified by their MFAs, the latter group by their lack of such formal education. This panel explored the pros and cons from the perspective of a young furniture maker interested in whether school was worth the cost.
